Martin Mulkerrins wins thriller in Tucson

In an edge of the seat thriller Moycullen’s Martin Mulkerrins prevailed against the #1 seed, Lucho Cordova to claim the Tucson ProStop title which sees Martin reclaim the #1 seeding.

The final see-sawed from start to finish with both players hitting their purple patches.

Mulkerrins’ precision striking, powerful passes and kill shots saw him take what looked like an unassailable lead in the first as he served game point at 14-7. Not to be, however, as his Mexican opponent was not going to relinquish his standing easily and proved his worth by successfully defending five game points eventually tying matters at 14-14.

The game now balanced on an overtime knife edge as the players needed to win by two points. An unretrievable pass shot regained the serve for Martin, followed by spinning serves and corner kills to see out a tense first game 16-14.

The second game was more of the same and again tied at 14-14, then 15-15 before Mulkerrins aced a serve for 16, then patiently played an extended rally before seizing an opportunity to power a pass by the right sidewall which he executed precisely to seal the win, 17-15, and claim back-to-back ProStop victories having won in Juarez, Mexico a fortnight ago.
The players head to Salt Lake City in three weeks to close out the season, it is still all to play for, double points on offer in the Utah venue leaves the eventual winner yet to be decided.
