No funding drawn down for Traveller accommodation across Galway this year

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway City and County Councils did not draw down any funding for Traveller accommodation this year.

Around 581 families live on permanent halting sites across Ireland, while a further 549 live on temporary or unauthorised sites.

Galway’s local authorities are among 15 councils nationwide which did not draw down any funding for traveller accommodation during 2015.

The list includes Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, in whose area 10 travellers lost their lives on a overcrowded halting site over the weekend.

According to the Irish Times, around 4.3 million euro was provided by the Department of the Environment to the 31 local authorities for traveller accommodation this year –  down from 70 million euro in 2008.
