Meeting today to try and resolve Connemara Leader funding controversy

Galway Bay fm newsroom – West Galway politicians and Connemara County Councillors are continuing their efforts to get a united front among organisations in Connemara that wish to have a role in the next Leader programme.

The TDs, Senators and Councillors are meeting today in Galway city with Comhar na nOileán, which has its offices on the Aran Islands, today

The Leader programme for the next five years may bring in between €3m to €4m to the region west of Galway City.

About 25% of that could go on administration meaning the funds will be considerably less than the previous Leader programme.

Comhar na nOileán, with offices on the Aran Islands, has teamed up with the Galway Rural Development Company and Galway Co Council in an application to run the programme in Galway and Connemara.

However, Forum in Letterfrack is compiling an application to run the programme in Connemara alone.

Forum already faces the potential loss of what is known as the SICAP programme and several jobs.

TDs, Senators and Councillors are trying to find common ground between Comhar na nOileán and Forum so that the running of Leader might in some way be shared in Connemara.

They met Forum last week and today they meet Comhar na nOileáin in Galway.
