Galway Heritage Boat to set sail in memory of murdered Swiss teen

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A traditional heritage boat is to be launched this afternoon in the city in memory of Swiss student Manuela Reido, eight years on from her murder.

Previously known as ‘Fiona’, the traditional boat underwent extensive restoration works and has been renamed ‘Manuela’ to commemorate the 17 year old who lost her life eight years ago.

The Swiss teen was murdered just three days after arriving in Galway in October 2007.

The newly christened boat was unveiled at a special Gala Ball held by the Manuela Riedo Foundation Ireland at the Ardilaun Hotel in the city last night.

The restoration works were undertaken at Rosmuc by Bádorí an Cladaig Community Boat Club, which is currently restoring a number of the traditional Galway sailing boats.

The boat was previously owned by Galway Crystal and was displayed in its museum until its closure, at which point it was given to Galway City Council on permanent loan.

The heritage boat ‘Manuela’ will take to the water for the first time at the Claddagh this afternoon at 4.
