Galway Crystal set to benefit from new EU protection laws

Galway Bay fm newsroom – One of the county’s best known products, Galway Crystal, could be set to benefit from special EU protection under a new proposal.

A new European Parliament resolution would see EU-wide protection of geographical indications for food products extended to include locally manufactured goods.

Galway Crystal has been listed in a European Commission report on potential candidates for protective status, alongside products including Donegal Tweed, Kenmare Lace and Newbridge Silverware.

MEP Mairead McGuinness is supporting the resolution, which she says would allow for the boosting of local production in areas including Galway.

MEP McGuiness says the extension of EU protective status from food products to regional manufacturing and craft industries is a vital step.
