A late goal by Cian Hanley snatched a 2-8 to 1-10 victory for TU Dublin against University of Galway in the opening round of the Sigerson Cup last night in Dangan. Late on two Cillian Ó Curraoin points edged University of Galway into a 1-10 to 1-8 advantage, before Hanley's goal won the day. Earlier in the second half Ryan O'Donoghue and Killian McGinnis traded goals, but a gritty TU Dublin, featuring Meath's Jack Flynn, earned an impressive win. Liam O'Conghaile, Paul Kelly, Cathal Sweeney and the Monaghan brothers Cian and Ryan were all on the scoresheet for University of Galway, who will be away to the loser of Thursday night's game between ATU Sligo or St Mary's in the next round.
Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Maynooth University registered a 4-11 to 2-9 victory over MTU Cork and Luke Donnelly's last gasp pointed free earned Queens University a first-round 1-10 to 2-6 win over DCU Dóchas Éireann at The Dub.
ATU Galway are in action this afternoon (Wednesday) against UCD in Ballyloughane at 2.30pm. The Dublin side includes Liam Costello from Milltown in their squad. The other games on Wednesday night are SETU Carlow at home to TUS Midlands, Ulster University against UCC and University of Limerick against ATU Donegal.
