The University of Galway senior footballers bowed out of the Sigerson Cup at the quarter-final stage last night in Dangan when a strong final quarter from UCD saw the Dublin side win by 1-14 to 1-6. UCD started the brighter and led 0-3 to 0-1 after 10 minutes, but didn't score again until first-half stoppage time as University of Galway took control of the game with a Ryan O'Donoghue goal to lead 1-3 to 0-4 at the break. UCD played their way back into the game in the third quarter and the sides were level at 1-6 to 0-9 when the University of Galway squandered two great goal opportunities and were made to pay, as UCD rattled off 1-5 without reply in the final quarter to book a semi-final meeting with UL. Elsewhere in the Sigerson Cup quarter-finals, the University of Limerick, featuring Claregalway's Conor Flaherty in goals and Corofin's Jack McCabe at full-forward defeated DCU, who Sean Fitzgerald from Barna in the full-back line. Final score: UL 0-14 DCU 1-10. Maynooth University scored a late winner over Queen's Belfast to win 0-10 to 0-9 and Ulster University recorded a 0-16 to 1-10 success over TU Dublin in Grangegorman.
