TG4 Connacht Ladies Senior Football Championship Begins Tomorrow
Connacht LGFA are all set for the 2025 TG4 Connacht Senior Football Championship, which kicks off tomorrow with the first round meeting of Mayo and Leitrim.
The Championship was officially launched at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar, by Connacht LGFA President Brendan Cregg.
The three competing counties in the Connacht Senior Championship (Galway, Mayo and Leitrim) were all represented by a player and member of the management team on the evening, as were Roscommon and Sligo who will compete in the TG4 Intermediate and Junior Championships respectively.
The TG4 Connacht Senior Football Championship takes on a new format this year, with the inclusion of the All-Ireland Intermediate Football champions Leitrim, who join the senior grade.
Instead of a straight final between Mayo and Galway, the three counties will compete in a round-robin league format before a Championship final for the CBE Cup.
In the opening round, Mayo welcome Leitrim to Swinford Amenity Park, before Leitrim will have a home venue themselves for their Round 2 clash with reigning Connacht champions Galway on Saturday, May 3. The final round will see Mayo travel to Tuam Stadium to face Galway on Sunday, May 11.
The teams who finish in the top two places in the group will face off in the Connacht final on Sunday May 25 at a Mayo venue.
Speaking at the launch of the Connacht Championship, Connacht LGFA President Brendan Cregg had high praise for the teams competing in this year’s competition, saying:
“It’s great to have three senior teams in Connacht.  We’ve had Mayo and Galway for a long time, and it’s great that Leitrim won the Intermediate All-Ireland last year. It just shows how strong football is in Connacht that we now have three senior teams.
“Leitrim’s performance in the All-Ireland final last year against Tyrone was one of the best performances I’ve seen in a long time in Croke Park. They’re a team that can raise themselves for the big occasion, and I expect them to have a good shot at the Connacht Championship.
“Mayo is a fantastic football county. They have a great tradition. The league doesn’t count for an awful lot when it comes to the Championship, so I expect Mayo to bounce back now and put up a great performance in the Championship.
“Galway have had a great start (to the year) to win the Division 2 league, and I think the game against Cork in the final will stand to them. It was a real stern test, and it will stand to them in the Championship.”
