A bit of history was made at the weekend in Navan Rugby Club when The Irish Wolfhounds, Ireland’s American Football Team, won their first ever competitive game in the European Championships with a dramatic 18-13 win over the Dutch Lions.
The Irish team led throughout the entire game, until the 4th quarter when the Dutch took the lead 13-12.
Trailing by a single point with seconds left in the fourth, John Hanbury of Rahoon/Newcastle, who started at left corner back in Galway’s All-Ireland Senior Hurling win in 2017 and playing at Tight End caught a pass from Matthew O’Meara for the winning touchdown.
Finn Kearns from Kinvara was one of the wide receivers and Andy Quinn from Creggs was the kicker scoring a field goal and a point after touchdown in Ireland’s win.
The Irish Wolfhounds travel to Turkey in November where a win will get them out of their group.
