Former Oughterard BC boxer Gearoid Clancy contests the Australian Super Lightweight Title in Queensland on August 4th.
Based in Bondi Boxing Club in Sydney Gearoid Clancy who goes by the ring name ‘The Galway Assassin’ will fight in what is his biggest pro bout in his career to date. He travels into Stephen Sparks back yard in Twoowoomba and goes in as the underdog.
Clancy said "A hostile environment is nothing new to me as I have always considered myself the away boxer even when boxing out of Sydney, the home-based boxer will always have the crowd behind them and I relish the opportunity of going into another boxers back yard and coming out the other side the winner".
This bout is Clancy's third consecutive title fight and comes into it in super form on the back of two impressive wins. He won the New South Wales Super Light Weight Title against Sam Williams in March of this year and last October won the WBF Australasian Super Light Weight Title with a unanimous win over Wanphichit Siriphana.
His decision to move into the Super Light Weight division from light weight has seen a great turn around in performances.
Gearoid has had a strong training camp in preparation for the upcoming bout and Luke Jackson who is taking on Carl Frampton for a World Title fight on August 18th in Belfast being just one of many top class sparring opponents.
There is a large following of Irish diaspora in Sydney for Clancy and the bulk of that support are of fellow Connemara and Galway people traveling to Queensland for this bout.
