History was made yesterday evening in Merlin Woods City Park when Galway's newest sports club Merlin Woods FC/Medtronic beat Corrib Rangers 1-0 in the Western Hygiene Supplies First Division. The win has resulted in the clubs promotion to the Western Hygiene Premier League and the clubs third promotion in a row. Manager Pat "Westie" Gannon deserves huge credit for managing the team from the bottom tier of the league to the top in just 3 seasons.
Merlin Woods FC/Medtronic adult soccer team is part of the very unique Merlin Woods Sports Club that has grown in Ardaun, Doughiska, Roscam and Parkmore.Started onl y 4 years ago by Galway United Supporters Trust with 3 footballs, the club wears Maroon representing Galway, Green for Merlin Woods and White for peace.
The club now provides Athletics with Castlegar Athletics, Basketball, Tennis, Cricket, Rounders, Volleyball and Soccer, and work closely with the local schools in Merlin Park and Brierhill alongside the Good Shepherd Parish church in Doughiska and the ARD Family resource centre.
The clubs ethos revolves around participation for all, diversity and inclusivity, an example of which is Mati Pietryk a young Galwegian/Polish 17 year old striker who has scored 12 goals since Christmas.
