Jes Rowers Help Ireland Win Gold at International Regatta

Five young Jes Rowing Club athletes were amongst 14 Galway rowers who produced great performances with Irish crews at the Home International Regatta held at Strathclyde in Scotland on Saturday, 27th July.

This annual competition features national teams from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and is widely regarded on the world stage and this year, rowers from Jes, NUIG and Galway Rowing Clubs played pivotal roles in Ireland's unprecedented success at the event.

The all Jes Men's U18 Coxless Pair of recently crowned Irish Champions Sam Reidy and Thomas Hume won their event in style, beating the English champions into second place in a fiercely fought contest.

Hume and Reidy, rowing at Stroke and Seven positions and coxed by Jes colleague Paul Tannian as part of the Irish Men's U18 Eight, later overcame a fast-finishing Scotland eight, having earlier beaten off the challenge of the fancied English team, to secure the second of many wins for Ireland.

The Irish Men's U18 Coxed Four was later coxed by Paul Tannian from Jes but narrowly beaten into second place by a very experienced England team.

The Men's Under 18 Squad were coached and managed by Jes Coach John Lawless, assisted by Mattie Kelly

Jes Girls Ellen Forde and Elise Carney-Frazier represented Ireland in an all Jes Women's Under 18 Coxless and battled bravely in difficult conditions before being eventually beaten into 3rd position by strong teams from England and Scotland in one of the most competitive races of the championship.

Rowers from Galway Rowing Club (Evelina Zakarauskraite and Maeve Quinn) and NUIG (including ex Jes rower Caoimhin Conway) all played outstanding roles in Ireland's successful participation at this year's competition.

2019 has been a very successful rowing year for Galway clubs - in addition to the above and the previous successes at the recent national championships in Cork, Galway rowing fans now switch their attention to supporting Mathew Gallagher from the Bish who is heading off to Tokyo soon to compete in the World Championships.
