1 Irish Rowing Championships
The 2019 Irish Rowing Championships began on Friday
12th of July in the National Rowing Centre, Farran Woods. With 1,224 crews
entered for the weekend’s event it is the biggest Irish Championships on
record.
Athletes from more than 60 clubs from all four provinces raced down the
championship course on Inniscarra Lake where the standard of competition was
impressively high throughout the day across each category.
Rowing Ireland’s High- Performance Operations Manager and Pathway Coordinator,
Fran Keane said “There were a lot of impressive results from selected Coupe De
Le Jeunesse athletes, Ciara Egan and Sadhbh Scully won the Junior Women’s
Double becoming the first female junior Irish Champions for their club Carlow
Rowing Club. With this win Sadhbh Scully also secured her place to the Coupe.
Sadhbh and Ciara both started rowing through the highly successful schools
rowing programme Get Going.Get Rowing which had a staggering 30,000 students
rowing in 2018. Lucy McCoy of Belfast Boat Club finished second in the race to
secure her place also. The Junior Men’s Coupe Quad finished first, second,
third and fourth in the Junior Men’s Single Sculls Event, with Tom Kelly of
Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club winning and becoming his clubs first ever Irish
Championship winner.”
There was a fantastic battle between Shandon Boat Club and Cork Boat Club in
the Men’s Intermediate 4 race, with Cork Boat Club powering ahead to take the
win in the end. In the Women’s Senior 4- NUIG had an impressive win against
Skibbereen to take the 2019 title.
Day
2 Irish Rowing Championships
Day 2 of the Irish Rowing Championships 2019 kicked
off on Saturday 13th of July at the Kinetica National Rowing Centre. Scorching
conditions added to the bustling atmosphere engulfing the centre. The mornings
racing saw a large number of Junior heats and finals as well as Home
International Regatta Selection Time Trial races.
The talk of the day was Lee Valley’s rising star Holly Davis who at the age of
just 14 won the Junior Women’s 18 Single Sculls. Holly will now go onto
represent Ireland at Home International Regatta as winner of the Home’s Time
Trial earlier in the day.
There was a big win for Colaiste Iognaid Rowing Club against Enniskillen Royal
Boat Club in the Junior Men’s 4 race, with all crews battling it out but
Colaiste Iognaid coming out on top with a comfortable win. There was hugely
competitive racing in the Men’s Junior 16 Eight Race, with a win for Enniskillen
over Castleconnell and Galway.
The Men’s Intermediate 8 race had the crowds on their feet as they battled to
the finish win with Cork Boat Club taking the win in the end, and 0.4 of a
second separating Dublin University Boat Club in second and Commercial Rowing
Club in third.
Anna Tyther and Zoe Hyde of Killorglin Rowing Club dominated the Women’s
Intermediate Double race, and with the win Anna secured her place on the Coupe
De Le Jeunesse squad.

our Junior Women with an astonishing display of rowing by Lee Valley’s Holly
Davis in the Junior Women’s 18 race and by Anna Tyther and Zoe Hyde of
Killorglin Rowing Club in the Inter Women’s Double.“
Day
3 Irish Rowing Championship 2019
Day 3 of the Irish Rowing Championships 2019 kicked
off today at the Kinetica National Rowing Centre. Another glorious day with
perfect rowing conditions greeted crews from the very first race today. The
morning racing saw a mix of heats and time trial events for Homes and Coupe de
le Jeunesse.
Cork Boat Clubs Junior Woman’s pair of Jane Duggan
and Claragh O’Sullivan had a great race and with their win also secured their
spots as the Pair for the Coupe De La Jeunesse.
Aodhan Burns of Skibbereen Rowing Club won the
Lightweight Men’s Scull over Enniskillen’s Darragh Larkin. While over on in the
Lightweight Women’s Single Sculls, Margaret Cremen dominated the course and
finished in a very comfortable first place.
Lee Rowing Club followed up their Junior Men’s Quad
win from yesterday with a win in the Junior Men’s Double today. There was a
hard fought race for second between Neptune Rowing Club and Castleconnell Rowing
Club, with Castleconnell claiming the second place title by 0.375 of a second.
There was an incredible battle between St Michaels
and NUIG in the Men’s Club 4+ which went to a photo finish with St Michaels
winning by just 0.32 of a second to take the title.
In the Blue Ribbon Finals, UCD Boat Club came out
victorious in the Men's Senior 8+ and a composite crew of NUIG/Castleconnell
took gold in the Women's Senior 8+ final. Both races had the crowds on their
feet and athletes put on a tremendous display of the hard work and dedication
put in throughout the season.
