The village of Hollymount is expected to be a hub of activity and excitement on Sunday the 14th of January for the first ever Hollymount Duathlon. This Duathlon will be the second event in the Bridge Signs Ireland West Duathlon series, following on from the ever popular Land of Giants Duathlon in Claremorris at Christmas.
Entries to the Duathlon have been flying in since the start of the New Year with people keen to burn off the Christmas cobwebs; the course being relatively flat, we are expecting some fast split times from the more experienced athletes, organizers are expecting in excess of 250 athletes to converge on the village of the Saucer. Hollymount recently relaunched Hollymount Wheelers which has in excess of 60 members and with the International run now going into its 53rd year, the village of Hollymount is now entering a new sporting chapter.
The duathlon itself consists of a 5k run, followed by a 19k cycle and finishes with a 3k run, all sections are relatively short and therefore suitable to all abilities.
The first 5k run is a loop around Lehinch returning to the transition area which is at the back of the stand in the Local community Grounds. Participants will get their bike here and embark on the 19k cycle which will takes them to the Country Club pub, around the roads of Taugheen and out to Peter Touhy's pub and then its a fast 8k cycle through Robeen and back to transition in Hollymount. The last 3k run is a loop (in reverse) of the Hollymount International Road Race route, finishing outside Cois Abhainn Centre in Hollymount.
Sign on (number collection) is from the Cois Abhainn Centre in Hollymount on Saturday, January 13th from 6pm to 8pm and again on Sunday morning, 14th January from 7.30am to 9.30am.
The Race briefing takes place at 10.15am outside the Cois Abhainn Centre and the event starts at 10.30am sharp. Changing facilities & showers for all participants will be in the dressing rooms of the community grounds (adjacent to transition). There will be refreshments for all participants in the Cois Abhainn Centre after the event. Prize giving will also take place in the Cois Abhainn centre from 1pm.
