HURLING: 'Round Robins' Set For Dramatic Finish as Galway Chase Leinster Final Place

Clare will play Limerick in the Munster final… Galway’s advance to the All-Ireland stages is assured. That still leaves a lot to play for in the final series of ‘round robin’ games in Munster and Leinster next weekend.

Limerick (7pts) have completed their Munster ‘round robin’ campaign and will play Clare (5pts) in the final. Clare play Waterford (2pts) next Sunday, with the game crucial for the Deise, who are fighting for third place. Cork (2pts) play Tipperary (0pts).

If Cork and Waterford both win, the Leesiders will take third spot as they won the head-to-head contest on Sunday. If Tipperary beat Cork and Waterford win or draw, the Deise will take third spot.

If Tipperary beat Cork and Waterford lose, scoring difference would decide which of the trio finishes third and advances to the All-Ireland stages.

Galway (7pts) lead the way in Leinster, followed by Dublin and Kilkenny on six points each, Wexford on four, Westmeath on one point and Laois on zero points.

There are several permutations regarding who can reach the Leinster final and who will be eliminated from the championship. Galway can’t be eliminated as they are three points ahead of Wexford.

The weekend line-up is as follows:

SATURDAY (6.0)
Leinster
Galway v Dublin, Pearse Stadium;
Kilkenny v Wexford, UPMC Nowlan Park;
Laois v Westmeath, MW Hire O’Moore Park

SUNDAY (4.0)
Munster
Clare v Waterford, Ennis;
Tipperary v Cork, FBD Semple Stadium

DUBLIN v GALWAY

A draw would be enough for Galway to clinch a place in the Leinster final. A draw would keep Dublin in the All-Ireland race while a win would see them reach the final.

LAST FIVE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETINGS

2021: Dublin 1-18 Galway 1-14 (Leinster quarter-final)
2019: Dublin 3-19 Galway 0-24 (Leinster ‘round robin’)

2017: Galway 2-28 Dublin 1-17 (Leinster quarter-final)
2015: Galway 5-19 Dublin 1-18 (Leinster quarter-final) Replay

*This will be the 12th championship match between the counties, with Dublin leading 7-3 while there was one draw in the previous eleven. Dublin won the last two in 2019 and 2021.

*Galway man, Mattie Kenny has two championship wins under his belt over his native county as Dublin manager. They won a ‘round-robin’ tie by four points in 2019 and had the same margin to spare in last year’s Leinster semi-final.

*Dublin scored only one goal (v Laois in the opening round) in their first four ‘round robin’ games. Galway scored seven goals in their four games.
