Golf Ireland is delighted to announce a new partnership with Samaritans Ireland, underscoring the governing body’s commitment to nurturing the mental and emotional health of the golfing community.
This collaboration will help raise awareness about Samaritans’ 24-hour helpline (116 123) and spotlight golf’s positive impact on overall wellbeing.
Golf has more than just physical benefits, golfers can avail of mental health benefits that include reduced stress, improved concentration and meaningful social connections. Golf clubs also provide a sense of belonging, offering a welcoming environment and peer support. This is a natural fit with Samaritans’ mission to ensure people have somewhere to turn to and for support when they need it most.
Breda Moore, Lady President at Seapoint Golf Links, Termonfeckin, Co. Louth, and Rory Fitzgerald (Tramore), Irish Senior Amateur golfer, both volunteer with Samaritans Ireland and encouraged clubs to support the partnership.
“Samaritans is an amazing organisation which is there to listen and support anyone, 24-hours a day, no matter what they are going through. It’s incredible that volunteers from both Samaritans and Golf Ireland will be working side by side to allow us to raise awareness of this life-saving service among club members and players,” said Moore.
“As a golfer and Samaritans volunteer, I understand the benefits of good mental health. I am delighted that this new partnership between Golf Ireland and Samaritans Ireland will benefit people across the country who may be struggling to cope but don’t feel they have someone to talk to,” said Fitzgerald, who has participated in many championships over 50 years and represented seven clubs at AIG Senior Cup level.
This new partnership will raise awareness of Samaritans’ free helpline, 116 123, ensuring golfers and the wider community know help is available 24-7. It will promote Inclusivity and wellbeing by emphasising golf’s ability to unite, while encouraging open discussions around mental health. It will also strengthen community bonds through club initiatives and events designed to reduce stigma and empower individuals to seek support.
With a network of 376 clubs, Golf Ireland’s commitment to promoting both physical and mental wellbeing continues. By combining efforts with Samaritans Ireland, Golf Ireland aims to empower people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the sport in a supportive environment, reminding everyone no one should face life’s challenges alone.
“We are thrilled to join forces with such an important charity as Samaritans,” said Golf Ireland CEO Mark Kennelly.
“Golf has always been about more than just the sport, it’s about building friendships and taking care of one another. Partnering with Samaritans helps us reinforce that sense of community and ensures anyone who needs help knows where to find it.”
“Looking after our mental health, and knowing where to get support if needed, is so important for everyone. Samaritans is delighted to partner with Golf Ireland and its members to highlight this,” added Samaritans Ireland Executive Director, Sarah O’Toole.
