Athlete Gary Thornton from the Galway City Harriers has produced a remarkable feat in athletics, winning seven consecutive marathons in seven days as part of the World Marathon Challenge and winning the Challenge outright.
Following his first three marathon wins in Antarctica, Cape Town and Perth, he followed up with victories in Dubai, Lisbon, Columbia Miami where he crossed the finish line in a time of 3.21.19.
Thornton’s first win in Antarctica was his fastest finishing time at 2.58.39, while he also completed his third marathon in less than three hours in a time of 2.59.55.
