Galway U20
footballer, Liam Costello, has been named as the EirGrid GAA U20 Player of the
Province for Connacht while his manager, Padraic Joyce, has
picked up the title of EirGrid GAA Manager of the Province.
The Tribesmen’s young player, Liam Costello, has
been selected for his fantastic performance in the EirGrid GAA Connacht U20
Football Championship final, helping Galway to secure their win against
defending champions, Mayo. Galway, who last won the provincial title in 2017,
proved to be too strong for Mayo and defeated them 0-16 to 0-10. This is
Joyce’s first year in charge of the U20 team and it has proven to be a
successful one thus far with Galway now through to the EirGrid GAA Football U20
All-Ireland Championship Semi-Final.
The EirGrid GAA U20 Player of the Province for
Leinster is Ciaran Archer while the Manager of the
Province is Tom Gray. In Ulster Sean Óg McAleer has been awarded EirGrid
GAA U20 Player of the Province and Paul Devlin has picked up the award for Manager
of the Province. Cathal O ’Mahony has been named as EirGrid Munster GAA U20
Player of the Province and the Manager of the Province is Keith Ricken.
The EirGrid GAA Player of the Province initiative
has been running at U20 for the last three years while this is the first year
that managers have been recognised for their efforts throughout the provincial
campaign. The players and managers have been carefully selected by the Gaelic
Writers Association.
External Communications Manager at EirGrid, Valerie
Hedin, commented;
“A huge congratulations are in order for Liam
Costello and manager Padraic Joyce for their
achievements with Galway GAA in this year’s EirGrid GAA Connacht U20 Football
Championship. The aim of the EirGrid GAA U20 Player and Manager of the Province
awards is to acknowledge those outstanding performances and achievements
throughout the season.”
Uachtarán Chumann Luthchleas Gael John Horan said:
“Well done to both Liam and Padraic on their
exploits at Tuam Stadium last week in helping Galway to overcome Mayo and claim
a Connacht title. Liam epitomised the Galway effort and was rewarded through
his scores and the management deserve great credit for their preparation of
this group of players. Both are deserving recipients.”
