With the new League of Ireland season starting in just over a week, Galway United have found themselves without a full size all-weather training pitch after a row over underage players with Mervue United. Galway United had been using Mervue’s home ground at Fahy’s Field (pictured) in recent seasons, but tensions have grown in recent weeks with the introduction of a new National U15 League which is restricted to senior League of Ireland clubs. Galway United are said to have signed a number of Mervue’s U15 squad ahead of the new competition and this is understood to be at the centre of the row.
United manager Shane Keegan is now considering moving pre-season training to Athlone IT or Limerick as there are no other full size Astro turf pitches in Galway as he explained to Oisin Langan.
