First half goals from Wilson Waweru and Stephen Walsh helped Galway United maintain their unbeaten start to the First Division season with a 2-1 win over Treaty United at Eamonn Deacy Park last night. Former United striker Enda Curran pulled one back in the second half, but United hung on to make it three wins and a draw from their opening four games.
The opening goal took just 5 minutes to arrive and it had a deal of good fortune to it, as a long throw-in by Killian Brouder was eventually flicked on by Edward McCarthy to Wilson Waweru and the striker's mis-kick evaded Treaty goalkeeper Jack Brady to find the net. Treaty responded well to the early set-back, with Enda Curran coming close on two occasions, before Stephen Walsh scored for the third game in a row to put United 2-0 up just before half-time. Walsh picked up possession in the box from a Waweru header and showed remarkable composure and skill to beat two defenders and the goalkeeper before clipping a shot into the top corner for a magnificent goal that sent the home fans wild.
The second half dropped in intensity until Enda Curran pounced on a defensive mistake to score for Treaty with 20 minutes to go. Diego Portilla's under-hit back pass to Conor Kearns was intercepted by Curran for the easiest of finishes and it set up a nervous final quarter hour for United, but goalkeeper Kearns earned his stripes with a couple of key saves as Galway held on for a fine victory.
