Sunday morning saw the much-anticipated return of the Tribesman Triathlon hosted by Galway Triathlon Club. In perfect racing conditions competitors from across the country took to Lough Corrib for an 800m swim before enjoying a flat and fast 20km bike course out and back to Moycullen before embracing the picturesque grounds of the University of Galway to finish their race with a 5km run in glorious sunshine. With almost 150 people taking part in the event there was a fantastic mix of athletes, from seasoned competitors to those tackling their first triathlon.
First across the line for the men was Galway’s Ruaidhí Geraghty in 1:06:20 followed by Eamonn Staunton in 1:08:30 with Martin Divilly rounding out the podium in third in a time of 1:08:33. In the women's race it was Kate Collins Smyth (pictured) who broke the tape after a blistering run to take the win in a time of 1:18:16 with Galway Triathlon Club’s rising star Aining Zhan taking second in 1:19:04 and fellow club member Jane Walsh taking the third step on the podium in a time of 1:19:48.
Speaking about the triathlon, Race Director Karen Malherbe said ‘We were blessed with the weather, racing conditions were perfect. The vibe and atmosphere all morning was just brilliant, it was a super day for athletes and supporters alike. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to the event's success. We couldn’t do it without the support of our fantastic club members and volunteers, our wonderful hosts at the University of Galway, our sponsors and of course the athletes who travelled far and near to be part of the event’
Hosted in partnership with the University of Galway and supported by Kingfisher Fitness Club, Nuasan and Revive Active, the event was a super success for all involved and plans are already underway for the 2025 edition of the event.
