Galway GAA officials hope to have a new manager in place before the county final on Sunday week between reigning champions St Thomas and Liam Mellows, but at this stage, it seems almost certain that the position is between Ciaran Carey and Louis Mulqueen.
Former Limerick star Ciaran Carey was an interested spectator at Sunday’s two senior semi-finals in Kenny Park in Athenry, and speculation is increasing that Galway may turn to the current Patrickswell manager to find a successor to Micheal Donoghue who stepped down in August. Carey's stock rose in recent weeks when he led his own club to county final victory over Na Piarsaigh, but his side will be in Munster semi-final action against either Sixmilebridge (Clare) or Ballygunner (Waterford) on November 10th, the same day as the Galway hurling final in Pearse Stadium.
One man who definitely will be in Pearse Stadium that day is Louis Mulqueen, who is also a strong contender having guided Liam Mellows on Sunday to a third successive county senior final. Mulqueen recently withdrew from the process to become manager of his native Clare, paving the way for Brian Lohan to be appointed in the coming days. The committee selected at a recent county board meeting to interview candidates for the position have indicated they are expecting to have a nominee to put forward for ratification this week.
