Galway senior camogie team continue winning ways

GALWAY 5-28  WATERFORD 1-10

Galway hammered Waterford in the Liberty Insurance Senior Camogie championship on Saturday in Athenry and will face a much tougher challenge against Kilkenny in the next round. Galway raced into 0-2 lead with Aoife Donoghue and Ailish O'Reilly on target before the Deise added a 5th minute goal from Becky Kavanagh, but that was as a good as it got for the visitors as the tribeswomen added three goals before the interval from Ailish O'Reilly (2) and Finola Keely to lead 3-16 to 1-7 at the break. The Galway girls were in cruise control in the second half and Noreen Coen slotted two goals late on as the victors ran out 30 point winners.

In the Intermediate championship game before hand on Saturday in Kenny Park, Meath took advantage of the second half elements to defeat Galway by 5 points, having trailed 0-7 - 0-6  at the interval. Leanne Freaney landed 0-7 for the tribeswomen in that opening half, with Tara Rutledge and Ava Lynskey also chipping in with points. Meath took advantage of the breeze midway through the second half and led 0-10 - 0-7 before Galway added a goal from Tara Rutledge to level the tie. The home sides joy was short lived however as Caroline Quinn goaled for Meath to re-establish a lead they would not relinquish.3 further points stretched the Meath lead to six before Leanne Freaney slotted home a second goal for Galway on 32 minutes to set up a grand stand finish. The Royals kept their composure though and landed 2 late insurance points to take home the spoils.
