Galway Magpies Masters AFL Session
Last Sunday (10th March 2024), members of the men’s and women’s Australian AFL Masters team hosted a skills session for the local AFL team – the Galway Magpies.
The Galway Magpies are a Men’s and Women’s Australian Football team based in Galway City. Three-time Brownlow winner (AFLs version of player of the year) Jasan Akernamas led the Magpies through several kicking drills and worked with players individually on their kicking technique.
Galway Magpies President Mark O’Brien said  “We’ve bought 10 men and 14 women into the club in the last few months, so the skills session came at a great time. For the newer players, it meant they got individual one-on-one help with their kicking technique and for the more experienced players it was a fantastic opportunity to learn from one of the all-time greats in Jason Akermanus.
“The Magpies are still recruiting so give us a follow on Instagram @galwaymagpies; the league kicks off in 9 weeks, so there is plenty of time to get involved.”
The Australian AFL Masters team are in Ireland to take on the Irish Masters team in two International Rules matches. With the Irish coming out on top in the first test the Australians are looking to level the series next Saturday 16th March in Denn GFC, Cavan.
