The battle to avoid the drop from senior to intermediate football in Galway will really ramp up next year if plans to reduce the number of senior teams in the county gets the green light. A proposal to reduce the number of teams in the Galway senior football championship from 20 to 18 in the next 3 years is currently being processed through the Galway Competitions Control Committee, The Connacht Council and Croke Park.
Proposal: To Reduce the Number of Senior Teams to 18 by 2020, Number of Intermediate Teams to Remain at 16, Number of Junior Teams to Remain at 16
Situation to be reviewed at the end of 2020 Season
In order for these changes to come in force Galway will have to get permission from the Connacht Council and Croke Park to reduce the number of Senior Teams and to promote and relegate more than one team. Under Rule counties are only allowed to promote and relegate one team in each Grade annually in the Championship.
