A proposal to reduce the number of teams in the Galway senior football championship from 20 to 18 in the next 3 years is currently being processed through the Galway Competitions Control Committee, The Connacht Council and Croke Park.

In order for these changes to come in force Galway will have to get permission from the Connacht Council and Croke Park to reduce the number of Senior Teams and to promote and relegate more than one team.  Under Rule counties are only allowed to promote and relegate one team in each Grade annually in the Championship.
