Indoor Season
The Galway Indoor Track and Field championships will be held over two days this weekend – Saturday and Sunday the 13th and 14th January. The U8 to U12 competition takes place Saturday with the U13 to Seniors age categories competing Sunday. A record crowd is expected given the new two-day format.
Round One of the National Indoor League takes place this Saturday 13th January. Galway City Harriers will field both Men’s and Ladies’ teams, which are managed by Cliff Jennings and Majella Loftus respectively, and both squads have a number of talented athletes likely to feature, such as Nicole King, Jean O’Connor, thrower Brendan Staunton and sprinters Cillin Greene and Jack Dempsey among others.
International Cross Country
The prestigious IAAF Antrim International Cross-Country event was held in Greenmount, Antrim on January 6th last. GCH Junior Men’s athletes Eanna Folan and Thomas McStay, ran well for the Irish Junior Men’s U20 squad that placed second team behind Scotland at the Celtic nations race in the event, with McStay coming home in 20th and Folan in 31st. Caron Ryan of Craughwell AC also competed on the Irish Junior squad and ran a great race placing 20th in the combined U17 and U20 Ladies race. Matt Lockett of GCH was team manager for the Irish U20 Men’s team, another honour for the hugely respected coach.
Fit for Life
The Athletics Ireland Fit4Life programmed restarts across Galway clubs this week and next. Athenry AC commence Monday 15th January for existing and new members. Fit4Life is on Monday and Wednesday’s at 7pm meeting at the church car park in Athenry.
Galway City Harriers Fit for Life programme will take new beginners starting on Thursday 11th January from Westside Library in the city (Contact Bernie Kelly).
