The Castlegar AC Cross Country event was held Saturday last on a superb course in the Racecourse in Ballybrit. Highlights of the day were two very competitive Senior races, with the Ladies’ race won by the impressive Aoife Kilgannon of Sligo AC, ahead of Olympian Breege Connolly of City of Derry AC in second and Michelle Kenny of Leevale third (pictured above). First Galway athlete home was Ellen Moran of GCH in fifth.

The Men’s race was a tight contest for much of the 6km distance, with eventual winner Dean Casey of Ennis Track pulling away in the later stages to claim victory ahead of clubmate Niall Murphy also of Ennis with William Fitzgerald of Craughwell AC, first Galway athlete home in third.

The Open 2km was won by Brian O Cualain, with the Boys 3k won by Gearoid King of Castlegar AC, and the Girls via Molly Smith of Loch Lurgan AC. Luke Walsh of South Galway AC and Isla Day of Clare River Harriers were the U13 winners, Sue Nolan and Finn Lynagh won the U11 races, and Cian Donnelly of Tuam and Saoirse Griffin of CRH won the U9 contests.

Tailteann Games: Several Galway athletes compete for Ireland at the SIAB International Track and Field competition in Derby, England, this Saturday, September 25th. The Irish team will face England, Scotland and Wales in the international competition, which this year will be on September 25th in Derby, England

Mathieu Madden of GCH/Merlin College competes in two Saturday, over Saturday, 400m Hurdles, and in the High Jump

South Galway AC athlete Stephen Mannion of Seamount College, has been selected for both the 100m and 4*400m relay squad

Liam Shaw of Presentation College Athenry and Athenry AC also has been selected on the double, and will throw in both Discus and in the Shot Putt, to secure his place on the Irish squad in both events.

Evan Hallinan of Presentation College Athenry and Craughwell AC will compete in the Triple Jump

Fixtures: Loughrea AC host their annual Road Race this weekend, as a Virtual only race, with details on the club’s website

The Galway Bay series of races takes place Saturday 3rd October over 10km, Half marathon and Full marathon in Salthill- limited entries available
