National 10km

Galway athlete Laura Shaughnessy of DSD AC had a superb run at the National 10k championships held in the Phoenix Park in Dublin Sunday last, taking National bronze in a great time of 35.04, on a most testing course around the Park.

Galway City Harriers athletes secured individual medals via Martin Kearney, who won silver at O60 level, while his clubmate, Martin McEvilly won bronze in the O65 category.

GCH senior ladies took team silver, with great performances from their Senior ladies’ squad. The team were led home by the strong running Barbara Dunne who clocked 39.08, with Grainne Ni Uallachain next and Sarah Makem third scorer, all combining well to take second behind a strong Metro team from Dublin.  GCH Men’s squad was led home by Gerry Carty who clocked a good 35.24, and placed in the team.

IUAA Track & Field Championships (7th/8th April)

A Joyce 3k

It was a very rewarding weekend for NUI Galway athletics squads at the Intervarsity Track and Field Championships held in Cork IT last weekend. NUIG, led by coaches Brendan Glynn and Matt Lockett, finished 8th university in the Men’s competition, 7th overall in the Ladies event, and 7th combined team.

There were two outright victories for the college, with the first gold coming via an outstanding performance from Aisling Joyce, who won the Ladies 3000m in an incredible time of 9:44.58, an NUIG Record, Grainne Kelly also of NUIG placed 13th in the same race

Aengus Meldon claimed the second gold for NUIG, again in a college Record of 1:52:51, and he was followed home by Roland Surlis also NUIG to make it a college one two in a great race between the pair.

Damien Landers took silver in the 1500m, again with a new NUIG Record of 3.56.59.

In the relay events NUIG excelled, with the Women’s 4x100m squad placing second, with the quartet of Aishling Forkan, Sinéad Treacy, Nicole King and Ciara Barry setting another new NUIG record of 49.66, while the Women’s 4x400m won bronze, with the squad comprising Aishling Forkan, Sinéad Treacy, Maebh Brannigan and Nicole King

The Men’s 4x400m team was third overall - with Eoghan Dobey, Roland Surlis, Jonah Erugo and Aengus Meldon all running well

There were other good performances across the programme – In the Women’s 200m Sinéad Treacy and Aishling Forkan were 5th and 7th respectively in the final, in the Womens 5000m Niamh Hennelly 5th in a good time of 18.39, while in the Womens Hammer, newcomer Gemma Lynch placed 6th overall.  The squad was rounded out by solid runs from Maebh Brannigan 800m, Jonah Erugo and Eoghan Dobey in the 200m, Owen Scully and Anna Giatraki 100m and Barry Quigg in the High Jump.

 

NUIG 800winner

Claregalway 5KM

Rob Lennon of Castlegar AC took the honours at the Claregalway 5km, held Tuesday last. Lennon just pipped Ger Hartnett of Tuam AC clocking 17.20 to the Tuam man’s 17.27, with David Meehan of Athenry AC third home in 17.34. First lady home was Bernie Mulryan of Athenry AC, while Shauna Bocquet was first wheelchair athlete clocking 18.54.

Fixtures

On Easter Monday, Loughrea AC host a 5k at 11 am with Race HQ at the Temperance Hall in the town.
