National Juvenile Indoors
Galway Athletes once again came away with a substantial medal haul on Days 2 and 3 of the National Juvenile Indoor Championships held last weekend, cementing the county’s reputation as a real force in Juvenile Athletics
Among the highlights was Sean Doggett’s individual gold in the U18 boys 800m, the Athenry star clocked a superb time of 1.55 to claim a well-deserved victory.
Sprint duo David and Stephen Mannion of South Galway AC made it a 1-2 claiming gold and silver in the U19 Boys 400m, with the former taking victory in 48.24
Declan O’Connell of Craughwell was another who really impressed with an incredible performance in the U16 1500m, not only winning but setting a16 Championship Record of 4.08.
In the field, Evan Hallinan of Craughwell won High Jump gold at U19 level, with a massive leap of 1.95 metres and later took Long Jump gold, Conor Penney also won on the double at U16 level, with High Jump and Hurdles gold for a superb double. Emma O'Donovan excelled in winning U16 High Jump gold.
Rachel Warde won gold at U15 level in the Hurdles for Craughwell, with medals also for Sean Colleran, Lauren Kilduff and Sean Hoade. Holly Shaughnessy performed strongly in the U18 walks to win a Bronze medal. Craughwell delivered three High Jump medals via Jade Moorhead (U19 Silver), Eva Kelleher won U18 Silver, and Oisín O’Donovan sailed to U14 Bronze with a superb leap of 1.50m
There was a great success too in the throws, with Lola Whitney-Mangan winning silver, while at U16 Joshua Whyte leaped 10.79m in the Triple Jump to win another excellent Bronze medal. More silverware followed in the sprints for Craughwell via Kai Watters who won bronze with an amazing time and U13 Lincoln King also won Bronze.
South Galway AC secured further medals via a gold medal win by Sinead Maher in the U18 Walk, Orlaith Mannion who 60m Hurdles bronze also for South Galway, Bronze for Sophie Farrell in the U19 girls 60m sprint and also bronze for Ciaran Kelleher in the U15 boys 1,000m walk.
Tuam AC claimed Double gold in the U16 walks via wins from Matthew Newell and Savannah O'Callaghan while in the U17 Girls 1500m Walk, Ciara Gilmore won Silver.
Tuam also claimed four bronze medals via Danielle Moynihan in the U17 200m, Rachel Treacy over 60m Hurdles at U14 level and doubling up with High Jump bronze, Alex Joyce in the U19 800m Girls event
Ava McKeon of GCH completed her juvenile indoor years by defending her National 60m hurdles title at U19 level with a fast 9.29s time to claim a superb gold. Michelle Nnadi also claimed 60m National gold at U14 level for the city club.
Angela Cielecka won two National medals for GCH of the championships with a brilliant silver in the U16 Long Jump and 60m.
Castlegar AC also secured National medals with Silver and Bronze for Lemar Lucciano and Leon Ewrere in the U17 60m sprints and U17 200m respectively.
Galway 5k Series
The EY-sponsored Galway 5k Series has very limited entries remaining on Eventmaster online, and the series is once again being held over six Tuesdays this summer. The first event is at 7.45pm in Skehana on April 25th, with subsequent races at 8pm each following Tuesday in Loughrea Craughwell, Kilcornan, Caltra, and Athenry. Entry is limited to 1000 entrants.
