Portumna Forest Races
The Portumna Forest park series of races was held Saturday last in the scenic wooded parkland, with four races on the card. The longest event, the 50k race was won by Louis Coyne of GCH in an impressive 3 hours 25 minutes, with first lady home Katarzyna Bobka in 3.40
The Marathon was won by Michael Bagnall in 2.49, with Rosarii Dune the Ladies victor. Connell Swords of GCH won the Half marathon in 1.22, with Maeve Flannery winning the Ladies in 1.32
Ed Maher claimed the honours in the 10km in 36.20, and Nikita Cassidy won the Ladies event
Galway County Championships
Day 2 at Dangan for the Galway County Track and Field Championships was held in windy conditions last Thursday, with another packed programme held by the Galway AAI team.
Robert Meagher of GCH and Sinead Treacy of Craughwell won golds over 200m, with Mathieu Madden and Michelle Nnadi claiming 400 Hurdles wins. An exciting Men’s 800m saw Kyle Moorhead win out for Craughwell in 1.57, with Caoimhe Kelleher of South Galway winning Ladies gold.
In the distance races, Catherine Thornton of GCH won the Ladies 3000m, with Abas Edris winning 5000m gold for Castlegar
In the Field, and Richard Kamson of GCH jumped farthest in Long Jump, while Pierce McManus, Liam Shaw, Thomas Farragher, Mary Barrett and Ella Rafferty were among the medals in the Discus and Weight throws.
Connacht Track and Field championships
The Connacht Juvenile Track and Field, and Adult Track and Field championships were held last Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th June respectively, at the AIT Outdoor track in Athlone. The U9 to U11 Paired events took place on Saturday, with Senior and Masters adult competition on the Sunday programme.
At Senior level, Kathryn Casserly of GCH won again, claiming the Ladies 3000m just ahead of clubmate Jane Ann Meehan. Saoirse Coleman of GCH was fastest in the Junior Girls for GCH over 800m, with Torin McGuire of South Galway fastest in the Men’s 800m. Cian Coyne won 1500m gold for GCH, as did Caoimhe Kelleher over 1500m for South Galway AC in the Ladies race.
In the sprints, Laura Nally won the Ladies 100m for GCH, Sinead Treacy won 400m gold for Craughwell, with Alix Joyce of Tuam winning the 400 Hurdles. Multi eventer GCH athlete Mathieu Madden won a super double over 100 flat and 400m Hurdles in the Men’s section.
In the Field events, Ella Rafferty for Tuam AC won double gold in Shot and Discus, while in the Men’s Liam Shaw of Athenry and Pierce McManus of GCH picked up golds at Junior and Senior level also in the throws
At Juvenile level, there were multiple Galway medal winners and walifiers for the upcoming ALL Ireland#
Among the highlights for Craughwell AC was star of the show Alan Hallinan who won triple Connacht titles with victories in the 60m hurdles in 10.44, the long jump with a leap of 4.33 and the 600m in 1:44.90.
There were some other fantastic results on the day for Craughwell including Oisin O’Donovan’s 1.42m PB to take the U13 High Jump title, Kate O’Leary won the U12 Girls High Jump title, Darragh O’Donnell ‘claimed the U12 Boys Long jump title, a blistering relay victory by the U11 Girls, while in the Pair the 60m combination by Ruby Maher and Laoise Colleran won them the U11 Girls sprint title and there was 500m gold for last year’s 300m National Champions Conor Mannion and Jack Hibbitt.
Castlegar AC won gold via Danny Cullinane and Finbarr Sayers in the U9 300m Pairs.
Galway City Harriers had gold medal wins via their U13 Girls Relay squad, Aisling Tauchen won U12 Long Jump gold, sprinter Michelle Nnadi won out over 80m at U13 level, and in the Pairs events Mathis Cullinane Veux and Roan Lydon won U10 Long Jump gold
Cathal Walsh won U12 Sprint gold for South Galway AC, as did Fionn Law of Corrib AC in the sprint hurdles .
Rachel Treacy took double gold over Hurdles and High Jump for Tuam, as did Cuisle O Callaghan was a gold medal winner for Tuam AC in the Race walk
