Schools International Cross Country

It was a worthwhile weekend for Cillian Jordan of St Endas College Galway, and the Junior Boys Irish Schools team, who finished 2nd team overall in the SIAB International Cross Country held Saturday in Port Talbot in Wales. Jordan was making his international debut, and finished a fine 16th overall and was 4th scorer on the Irish Junior team.

The National Juvenile Indoor Track and Field Championships were held last weekend over two days, at the Athlone IT Arena. Galway athletes were to the fore in many events, and returned West with a large medal haul.

Chloe Casey of Craughwell AC was the undoubted star of the weekend, as she took gold in the U16 Girls Shot Putt with an enormous throw of 14.21 metres, setting a new National record in the process.

Jack Dempsey of GCH also claimed gold in the 60m, with a superb time of 6.97 seconds. Lydia Doyle of the city club won silver in the U18 Girls 60m sprint. The GCH U19 boys relay squad took silver at the National Indoor Championships, just being pipped by old rivals Memphians AC, with the team comprising Sean Kilmartin, sprint champion Jack Dempsey, Luke O'Shaughnessy and Darren Costello.

In the field, Jerry Keary of Craughwell AC won silver in the U18 Boys High Jump leaping 1.96m, Eoghan Jennings of GCH won a superb silver in the U16 Boys Pole Vault clearing a height of 2.75 m, while Liam Shaw of Athenry AC threw a huge 12.47metres in the U13 Boys Shot putt to also claim a silver medal.

Brendan Lynch of Loughrea AC was third in the U19Boys Long Jumps jumping 6.25m, while Jack Hession of Tuam AC took bronze at the U14 Boys Long Jump ,and Evan Hallinan of Craughwell AC took well deserved bronze in the U13 High jump in an exciting competition.

There were several athletes who just missed out on medals, including GCH's Aaron Brennan at U17 and Eanna Folan at U19, both fourth placed in exciting 1500m races.

World Masters Championships

S Mcdermott WC

Sean McDermott of Castlegar AC and Ian Egan of Tuam AC return home with the Irish squad from a very successful World Masters Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea held last week . Both athletes claimed a medal apiece, with McDermott winning a fantastic team gold medal on the Irish Over 35s Cross country team, while Egan won half marathon bronze along with the Irish squad at O45 level. Egan also put in a seasons best 3k performance clocking 10.12 for fifth place in the track event.

Ballinderry 5km,

Damien Ryan took the honours at the Ballinderry 5km, hosted by Corofin AC, in superb conditions for running, on Sunday last. Second home was Stephen Nash, with Brian Lalor third. First lady home was Claire Rowe of GCH, with Eimear Bray of Corofin AC second and Karen Burke third

Next on the road racing fixture list is the New Inn 5km, to be held next Sunday, 2nd April at 1pm,

Registration is only 10 Euros, from 11.00 a.m. on the day in New Inn Leisure Centre or at the school during school hours prior to the race. There will be prizes galore on the day, with
