Clinic Streets of Galway 8k

This Saturday at 7 pm sees the highlight of the Galway
road running calendar take place, the 34th edition of the famous Streets of
Galway 8k Road race. The race, backed this year by Galway Clinic, starts at GTI
at Fr Griffin Road, and routes through the main landmarks of the city, and onto
Salthill and the Claddagh into the finish at South Park.

The Streets is one of the most prestigious and high profile events in the Irish running calendar. This year a record field of 3,400 will race the event with some of Ireland’s top athletes, club runners, many visitors, along with thousands of locals will take on the 8km challenge,

Many famous names will take part from
all walks of life in the city and beyond, including three athletes who have run
all 34 events, Ger Meehan from Dooneen, Patrick Larkin from Moycullen and
Gerard Murphy from Claregalway.

The Men’s race this year will feature several of Ireland top distance runners, such as Damien Landers of Ennis Track, Kenny Rodgers of St Johns AC, Lindsay Gordon and Paddy Hamilton of North Belfast AC and top local runners like Jamie Fallon of Craughwell AC and Jack Maher of GCH all of whom will challenge for honours in the elite men’s section, while the elite Ladies section is equally of high calibre and will see Siobhan O’Doherty returning, and will be challenged by Ann Marie McGlynn of Letterkenny, Teresa Doherty of Finn Valley and local athletes Regina Casey and Jane Ann Meehan of GCH.

Nicole Walsh of GCH who competes for Ireland on the 4x400m relay squad at the European Senior team championships this weekend

Congratulations go to the very dedicated and talented Nicole
Walsh of Galway City Harriers on her selection for this weekend’s European
Team Championships as part of the 4x400m relay squad. This will be Walsh’s
first cap for Ireland and is on the back of a brilliant season to date, capped
by her National Senior bronze medal over400m recently. The Championships will
be held from 9th to 11th August in Norway.

Youth
Nations Cup

GCH athletes Seren O'Toole and Eimear Rowe who competed for Ireland at the Youth Nations Cup last weekend

This year's Youth Nations Cup was held last weekend in Santry, Dublin, when the best of Irish athletes competed against the England team, with two athletes or teams from each country in each event. The event was especially successful for Eimear Rowe, Seren O’Toole and Robert McDonnell, three GCH athletes who competed for Ireland, with four medals via the trio over their respective events.
Robert McDonnell was part of the winning Irish 4x400m relay team that edged past their English counterparts in a quick 3:21.73 for gold and also ran the 400m where he recorded 49.14 seconds for a fine bronze.
Seren O'Toole was well clear in second spot over 400m Hurdles in 64.73 to earn silver.
Eimear Rowe ensured all three brought medals back to Galway playing her part in the Ireland 4x400m team that finished third in a superb 3:55.51.

World Para
Athletics Junior Championships

Craughwell AC athlete Shauna Bocquet recently who competed for Ireland at the IPC World Para Athletics Junior Championships 

Talented Craughwell AC athlete Shauna Bocquet travelled with Paralympics Ireland to represent Ireland at the IPC World Para Athletics Junior Championships in Nottwill, Switzerland held last weekend

Bocquet competed across five distances (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m) in the U17 Female T54 category. She took an incredible three gold medals on the track, winning over 1500m and also claimed 100m and 400m gold, and won double silver over 200m and 800m for good measure,

National
Half Marathon

The National Half Marathon Championships take place on Sunday next in Dublin city centre, with race start at 8 am, and will see many Galway athletes chase National silverware.

European Masters Games

Mary Barrett of Loughrea AC competed
at the European Masters Games in Torino in Italy last week, winning three
medals, with a superb gold in the 80m Hurdles in a new Irish record of 15.0
seconds, silver in the Shot Putt and bronze in the javelin with 22.64m again a
new Irish record.
