European U18 Championships

Four Galway athletes compete on a  35 strong Irish team  in the European U18 Championships in Slovakia which takes place this week. Conor Penney of Craughwell has been picked in the High Jump for the Irish squad, along with Orlaith Mannion in the 100m Hurdles, for South Galway AC.

Ireland have a very  strong walks selection to a European Championships with Matthew Newell (Tuam AC) and his clubmate Savanagh O Callaghan part of a top-class squad.

Conor Penney and will be in action at 3pm Friday afternoon in the qualifying round and hopefully again 8:45am on Sunday in the final.  Orlaith Mannion will be competing in the 100m Hurdles heats on Thursday at 4:30pm. Friday at 6.10pm sees Savanagh O Callaghan feature in the Ladies 5000m Race Walk while Matthew Newell goes in the Men’s 5000m Race Walk on Sunday at 4.55pm

Irish Schools International

A strong International Team from Schools athletes is  set to compete in Carmarthen Athletics Track, Wales on Saturday 20th July 2024 in the SIAB Home Countries international

Galway athletes selected include Ben Moran of Presentation Athenry, Daniel Sangodele of the Bish,  Tom McHugh of Clifden CS, Angela Cielecka of Taylors Hill, Lucy Hounkponou of Colaiste Baile Chlair, Lauren Kilduff of Gort CS, and Niamh Madden of Portumna CS

Cork City Sports and AAI Games

Galway’s Senior athletes put in some excellent performances at the high-profile Cork City Sports and AAI Games held over the past week

At the 70th Cork City Sports, Robert McDonnell and Andrew Egan of GCH  were superb in the high quality 200m race , heading home with a Season's Best and a new PB respectively, with 21.000 and  21.28 on the board.

Sinéad Treacy won the 400m in an exceptional 54.85 in the 400m to smash her own club record. Also for Craughwell  Kyle Moorhead ran a perfectly executed 1500m, finishing in 3:55.07 after making all the right moves. Jack Miskella smashed out another 1:54.48 in a high standard 800m, while GCH athlete Keith Fallon clocked 1.56 . David and Stephen Mannion of South Galway clocked quick 48 second times over 400m.

In the field, Richard Kamson won the Triple Jump, for GCH, while Athenrys Liam Shaw placed 4th in the Discus

National Juvenile Outdoor Track and Field Championships

The second weekend of the National Juvenile Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held in Tullamore this weekend, with the  123.ie National Outdoor Juvenile ‘B’ Championships and Juvenile Relays taking place on Saturday 20th with a second day of Juvenile championship individual action on the Sunday 21st July

Streets of Galway 8km

Entries are already selling fast  for the 38th annual Streets of Galway 8k, which will be held on Saturday August 10th next in the city at 7pm . Less than 300 entries remain for the event with just over 3 weeks to go before race day .  Once again sponsor Blackrock Health Galway Clinic are behind the event along with Galway City Harriers , and a field of over 3,000 is expected to take part. Entry is available on Eventmaster right now.
