Work is proceeding this week on the fitting of more
than 1800 seats on the new terracing located on the stand side of the playing
field at Tuam Stadium.
This follows the recent announcement that Galway Co
Council's planning department had given the green light for a number of upgrade
proposals for the iconic GAA venue.
Well known business family Tommy Varden Ltd,
suppliers of catering appliances and equipment to pubs, hotels and the
hospitality sector in general since 1973, this week announced a €50,000
sponsorship of the seating for the new spectator area.
Company directors Marguerite and Vincent Varden say
they are delighted to follow in the footsteps of their late father in
supporting Galway GAA, especially the famous stadium in their home town.
"Our main offices and our new showroom are at
Riverside Commercial Estate in Galway but we all live in Tuam and do a lot of
business in the town and in north Galway," said Marguerite Varden.
"For as long as I can remember, everybody we met knew our father, Tommy,
as either Seán Purcell's friend or as the man who sponsored Galway football. Tuam
Stadium always got a mention, so it's great that we now have an opportunity to
play a part in keeping it alive and well."
The popular Tuam venue, which will be a 70-year-old
landmark in May of next year, will host a very attractive double-bill of football
fixtures this Saturday: Corofin vs Salthill-Knocknacarra in the county senior
championship semi-final, and Glenamaddy vs Salthill Knocknacarra in the county
junior final.
It is hoped that the new terraced area, with
seating, will be open for spectators on Saturday.
