On Saturday next, Dunmore RFC will be taking on their biggest challenge off the pitch. They are doing an innovative charity challenge to raise money for Pieta House.

The ‘Push4Pieta’ event will see Dunmore RFC and friends push their scrum machine over 33km, from outside the Pieta House building in Tuam to the Sportsground, ahead of Connacht’s PRO12 game with Leinster.

Teams of pushers will take it in turns to push the hefty machine down the N17 into Eyre Square, we will be in Eyre square from 2:30pm to 5:30pm and then will continue our journey to the Sportsground.  We will be parking our scrum machine in the car park of The Huntsman where there will be a ‘Push4Pieta’ BBQ.

When this first came to the fore we had to decide on a charity. The committee and players decided that if we were to do this event, we wanted to work with a charity that meant something to us. Pieta House was that charity because suicide has directly affected our players and also our supporters. Suicide is a leading cause of death in Ireland especially in males between 15 and 34. All the men who are taking part in this challenge are within this age bracket. With 8 out of 10 suicides each week being men; we feel that more needs to be done to support charities like Pieta House. Along with raising much-needed awareness and funds for Pieta House, the event is also part of Dunmore RFC’s continued drive to build playing numbers at the club and fundraise. To create awareness about the event and generate funds the players and their friends have also incorporated a ‘Push4Pieta’ challenge. Challenges - big or small, have been completed, with clubs encouraged to record the task, post it to the Dunmore RFC Facebook or Twitter page using the hashtag #Push4Pieta, and make a donation via text or online. These challenges have seen the players push cars, tractors, shopping trolleys and a whole host of weird and wonderful things.
