Following their win over Munster yesterday (Thursday), Connacht's senior golfers went into today's match with Ulster knowing a win would set them up for a final day showdown with Leinster at the Interprovincials held in Tullamore.
Unfortunately for Connacht, Ulster did not read the script and came away with a 6-5 win. That combined with Leinster's 8.5 to 2.5 win over Munster now means that Leinster will win the Interprovincial title as long as they avoid a heavy defeat to Connacht on the final day (Tomorrow).
Connacht lead Ulster 2.5 to 1.5 after the foursomes going into the afternoon’s singles. Galway’s Ronan Mullarney and partner Jack McDonnell were beaten 4&3 by Tiernan McLarnon and Colm Campbell, Galway’s Joe Lyons and partner Simon Walker were 3&2 winners over Matthew McClean and
In the singles, Ronan Mullarney got Connacht off to the perfect start with a 3&2 win over Matthew McClean but Sean Flanagan and Simon Walker then lost their matches 4&2 and 2&1 to Tiaran McClarnon and Colm Campbell respectively. Allan Hill from Athenry halved his match with Marc McKinstry but Connacht were now in trouble and Harry Gillivan was beaten by One Hole by William Small. It was now down to the final two matches on course and TJ Forde's win over Rory Williamson gave Connacht hope that ended when Jack McDonnell was beaten by Jordon Hood in the last match by just one hole.
Connacht now have to beat Leinster by at least five points if they are to win the interprovincials for 2019.
The Table at the moment reads like this..
