Galway United have announced that Vincent Borden has re-signed for the senior men's team for the 2025 season. It will be the third season at the club for the 25-year-old American, who made 29 appearances for The Tribesmen last season, starting in 24 of them. Borden was an important member of a side that conceded only 29 league goals last season (the second-best record in the League of Ireland for 2024). He contributed with his impressive defensive numbers, such as his 55 aerial duels and his 78% of tackles won. He began his professional career in Croatia in the youth academy of Dinamo Zagreb. A year later, he went to the New York Red Bulls academy and then played with Rutgers University in New Jersey before joining United in January of 2023. Borden's highlight of the season will likely be his sliding finish to equalise in a 2-1 victory against Waterford back in March. The announcement of Vincent Borden’s return for 2025 follows the news that goalkeeper Brendan Clarke and midfielder Patrick Hickey have committed to Galway United for next season.
One man who has departed Galway United for near neighbours Sligo Rovers is Francely Lomboto, who leaves after four seasons at Eamon Deacy Park. 24-year-old Lomboto had come through the Galway United Academy to sign for the club in 2020, but started just two games in the season just ended. Sligo Rovers manager John Russell, another ex-Galway United player, was full of praise for Lomboto: “He has really good attributes that I like. He’s so fast and really strong. I feel we can improve him as a player, our style of play will suit him. I think there’s potential to turn him into a really good centre-forward. I know he’s played a lot on the left-wing and he can play across the front three. I just look at Francely and think if he comes into our environment, works with us day-to-day and we can supply him, I feel he has the attributes to go and score goals. It’s exciting."
More announcements are expected over the coming weeks as Galway United look to continue building their squad for next season.
