Tributes paid to former Galway United Player/Manager John Herrick RIP

Former Galway Utd player/manager and Ireland International John Herrick has passed away, aged 78. John came to Galway as player-manager in 1979 and led the club to their highest-ever finish in the 1979/80 season, which he matched in his 4th season when finishing up at the end of 1982/83. In total, he managed the club for 146 games, having returned for a brief spell at the start of the 1988/89 season. He also played 112 times, scoring 9 times.

A highly talented young player who grew up playing for the Glasheen club in Cork city, he signed for Queens Park Rangers in 1966 but only lasted at the London club for 12 months. Herrick was a member of the Cork Hibs team that won the FAI Cup in 1972. He joined Limerick for a season in 1976 and helped them to a place in the FAI Cup final, where they were defeated by Dundalk 2-0. He then had two seasons with Drogheda United before he joined Galway United in 1979. Herrick spent five seasons with the westerners before hanging up his boots in 1983, having concluded 24 years playing at the top level of the sport in this country. John was capped three times for the Republic of Ireland by Liam Tuohy, the highlight of his international career being a 1-1 draw against France in a packed Parc des Princes in 1973.
