On Thursday (5th December 2024), the general assembly of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) voted to align the footbal calendar meaning all competitions will now have to be played during the calendar year.
By 74 votes to 56, it was determined that a new calendar will be introduced for all levels of the game, phased in between 2026 and 2028.
Galway United and some national competitions already play a summer season, but the Galway FA local junior fixtures have gone through the winter months (August-May) as well as the Connacht FA. That will move to probably February to November.
The new calendar will be introduced for 5-12 year olds (2026), 13-16 year olds (2027) and youth and adult competitions (2028).
On 'Over The Line' this week (Friday, 6th December), Galway Bay FM's Mike Rafferty joined Darren Kelly to discuss the implications of this decision.
