Ours to Protect is a unique and exciting audio project – a collaboration of local and regional broadcasters from across the country who have come together to tackle climate change, champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Ireland about how they can make a difference.

Today on ‘Ours To Protect’ John Morley talks to John Byrne, CEO of Hygeia, about the benefits of organic gardening.

Did you know…

  • Hygeia, a garden care company based in Oranmore, won an SFA National Small Business Award for their efforts around sustainability
  • Hygeia was founded in 1939 and was originally based in Nun’s Island
  • Organic gardening offers a multitude of benefits, not just for your health and the environment, but also for your wallet and overall well-being

Why is it important to support organic gardening?

  • It supports local farmers and your own community.
  • No harsh chemicals means cleaner food for you and less pollution for the environment.
  • Organic practices help soil, air, and water stay healthy, which is good for everyone, including bees and other helpful creatures.

What can I do to help support organic gardening?

  • Start your own organic garden, even if it's just a few pots on your balcony.
  • Whenever possible, choose organic fruits and vegetables at the grocery store.
  • When purchasing seeds or seedlings, opt for certified organic varieties to ensure they haven't been treated with synthetic chemicals.
