November 1st to 3rd will see the 12th annual Galway Masters tournament take place at the University of Galway Kingfisher. The Galway Masters is an international basketball tournament consisting, this year, of 46 teams across eight categories: Men’s 40s, 50s, 60s & 65s and Women’s 40s, 45s, 50s & 55s. Teams are travelling from the USA, Spain, England, Scotland, Wales, Italy and all across Ireland.
The tournament is run on a ‘not for profit’ basis with any surplus funds and the proceeds of their Gala Dinner raffle going to the nominated cause. In previous years the tournament have supported The Alzheimer’s Organisation, Autism Services, Wheelchair Basketball, Suicide Prevention, Breast Cancer Research, Galway Hospice Foundation and Voices for Down Syndrome Galway, Aoife’s Clown Doctors, Joanna Lamb It’s Good to Give (childrens cancer services). The nominated charity for the 2024 Galway Masters Tournament is Galway Mountain Rescue. The organisation is staffed entirely by volunteers and provides a 24-hour search and rescue service responding to incidents in the upland and remote areas of counties Galway and Clare.
The tournament brings in over €200,000 to the local economy per annum and has raised over €50,000 for charities across the years.
