The Players Championship in Sawgrass, one of the most prestigious events on the USA PGA tour, will have West of Ireland involvement in 2025 in the shape of Galway Bay Golf Resort Course Superintendent Damien Coleman (above right). The Clare native, who has been working in the Golf Resort for almost 17 years, has been selected as one of only two International Volunteers as part of the BIGGA John Deere TPC Sawgrass Volunteer Programme.
Damien who has described the honour as the opportunity of a lifetime, has been selected along with Tim Leat Assistant Superintendent from Rich River in Australia. The Players Championship with a purse of $25million is often referred to as the 5th Major. Past championship winners include legendary names like Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Fred Couples, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus and current champion Scottie Scheffler going for an unprecedented three in a row in 2025.
The Championship will take place from March 11th to 16th at The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. “Damien shows a fantastic passion for his profession and his dedication to his craft which reflects in the superb condition of the Galway Bay Golf Resort course”, said Wayne Neilon Connacht Hospitality Group General Manager. He went on to wish Damien the very best of luck and looks forward to seeing what Damien brings back to implement here in the course.
Galway Bay Golf Resort is an oceanside golf course that provides an eye-catching setting more than worthy of a casual round of golf or a competitive match. It is truly an exciting time for the entire team in Galway Bay as the new hotel on the grounds of the resort is coming along with great gusto, building work is well underway on this stunning property which will certainly be a jewel in the crown of the Connacht Hospitality Groups offering upon completion. The entire team in Galway Bay wishes Damien the very best of luck on this venture.
