Connacht Juvenile Cross Country Championships
The second of three days of the Connacht Cross Country Championships took place on Monday October 28 in Moyne in Longford with the holding of the Juvenile Even Ages and Adult Senior League events.
Galway athletes had much success and were off to a flyer with Katie Considine’s win for Craughwell in the U10 Girls race, with Hana Gheziel third for Castlegar, and South Galway AC winning team gold and CRH team silver. Dylan Devitt of GCH won bronze in the U10 Boys race, leading GCH to team silver.
Castlegar AC Boys team excelled winning team bronze at U12 level, and their U14 Girls did likewise.
At U14 level, Patrick Lee of Clare River Harriers had a great run to take silver in a competitive field, with the team also placing second.
In the U16s, the GCH girls team won silver, while in the Boys, South Galway AC dominated claiming team gold, and an overall win via Ciaran Considine, with clubmate Luke Walsh just behind in second.
Luke O Sullivan of Craughwell AC won U18 Boys gold.
At Senior level, Abaas Edris of Castlegar AC continued his good vein of form claiming Connacht gold, with clubmate Aimad Belayd in second. Mari Johnson of Sligo won the Ladies' race, with Triona Moran of Castlegar best Galway athlete in fourth. Rocher Adeyeye won a fine silver in the Junior men's race for Tuam AC.
This weekend sees the Connacht Uneven Ages Juvenile championships and the final day of the Adult League take place in Roscommon Racecourse from 11 am.
Dublin Marathon
Almost 18,000 athletes completed the famous Dublin Marathon, incorporating the National Championships in good conditions Sunday last.
Galway athletes travelled in force with some outstanding performances, notably from GCHs John Dolan with a flying 2.37 clocking first home. There were further excellent sub three performances via Louis Coyne, Bernard McLoughlin, Shane Slattery all of GCH, Paul Keane of Craughwell, Colm Byrne of East Galway and Derek Kelly of Galway Trail runners. Tuam AC trio Sean Burke, Ger Hartnett and Gearoid Healy won V50 team bronze with Burke home in 2.42 with all three under the 3 hour mark.
In the Ladies Grainne Ni Uallachain of GCH broke the 3-hour barrier again with 2.58, good for second place in her age group, with Jane Ann Meehan of Athenry next home in a solid 3.06.
