The Warm Home Hub Galway

The Warm Home Hub Galway, creating warmer, healthier & more energy efficient homes - a pilot programme in conjunction with EU NetZeroCities & Galway City Council.

The Warm Home Hub is a community one-stop-shop for retrofit located in Westside, established to guide households in the area through the retrofit process. The Warm Home Hub team provide a free consultancy service to households interested in finding out more about the energy efficiency of their home. The Warm Home Hub team offer guidance on available grants, cost saving calculations, retrofit options and home energy upgrades, as well as providing free BER assessments to help households start their retrofit journey.

The Warm Home Hub was formed as part of the Galway City NetZeroCities pilot project , a European-funded initiative aimed at supporting cities to reduce their carbon emissions. Galway City’s project focuses on the energy efficiency of homes and a number of ideas, aimed at encouraging homeowners to retrofit their homes, are being trialled in the city’s Decarbonisation Zone, which covers the areas of Westside, Shantalla, Rahoon and Newcastle.

Improving energy efficiency in buildings is a top priority for Galway City on the road to net zero. A baseline study carried out by Galway City Council found that residential buildings account for over 40% of carbon emissions in Galway City. The Warm Home Hub was established to test a community and area-based approach to retrofit and to offer hands-on and practical support to households on energy use. Energy upgrades will improve the energy efficiency of homes but will also help make homes warmer, healthier and more comfortable to live in.

Each month on Galway Talks John Morley has an in depth look at some of the aspects of retrofit and the work that The Warm Home Hub Galway are doing.

Episode 2 - Retrofitting your Home – Fabric First - Thurs 13th Feb '25

Join Sandra Riordan of the Warm Home Hub in Westside and insulation expert, Eddie Smith from Eco-wise, to discuss insulation for your home.

Fabric first – when looking to improve the energy efficiency of your home, it is important to look at the fabric of your house first – the walls, the ceiling, the floor – and to insulate against heat loss. This will ensure that the heat in your home stays in your home, increasing your comfort levels and reducing your heating bills.

  • You can save up to €600 per year on heating bills by insulating the attic and walls of your home properly
  • A home can lose up to 30% of its heat through poorly insulated roofs and walls
  • A home can lose up to 10% of its heat through poorly performing windows, doors and uninsulated floors
  • A well-insulated home will need good ventilation

There are grants available to help you to insulate your walls and attic to reduce heat loss and your heating bills. In many cases, the grants cover most, if not all, of the cost.

  • Attic insulation - often the most cost-effective upgrade made to a house
  • Cavity wall insulation - cavity walls are injected from the outside with insulation.
  • Internal insulation (Dry Lining) - insulation boards are fixed to the inside of external walls
  • External insulation - Insulating materials are fixed to the outer surface of external walls
