Work is set to begin next month on turning the Kirwan roundabout in the city into a signalised junction.

The new junction will feature a four arm, traffic lit interchange that will support cyclists and pedestrians with built-in cycle lanes and toucan crossings.

Advanced works will begin at the end of October and will include earth works, the diversion of a watermain and the installation of temporary fencing.

The main onsite work will take place 6 months after the completion of earth works to pre-load soft ground on the site to support the junction.

Four private properties will be impacted by the project including the Menlo Park Hotel, a B&B, a residence, and a partially constructed residential site.

The full project is set to cost approximately 5 million euro and is due to be completed and open in the second half of next year.

Senior Executive Engineer with the City Council Transport Section, Fran McAvoy, Says the current Kirwan roundabout is a missing link for cyclists and pedestrians.
