An update on the plan was confirmed at this week’s meeting of Conamara Municipal District.

Fiona Holland, Senior Executive in Galway County Council told Connemara Councillors that tenders for the Inis Oirr pier project will be sought early in 2022.

Contractors are likely to be appointed in the second quarter of the year.

However, a foreshore licence is needed and there are no certain timescales as to when that matter will be finalised.

Land acquisition issues and ecological studies also form part of the preparation.

Councillor Dáithí Ó Cualáin stressed that the work on the Inis Oirr pier is urgently needed and he hoped that there would not be any delay in obtaining the foreshore licence.

He instanced serious safety issues and water overtopping at the pier.

Meanwhile, Councillor Gerry King said that bringing boats ashore in Inis Turbot, an island west of Clifden, can be precarious, especially in certain tidal conditions. A number of second homes are not established on Turbot and Councillor King said the main departure area on the mainland also needed more car parking facilities.
