Galway Bay fm newsroom - Work has begun on new zones to improve road safety at 14 schools across the city.
The purpose of the scheme is to raise awareness among road users that they are entering an environment where there is a school and to encourage lower speeds.
The initial works comprise the laying of coloured spots and road markings at drop-off points.
It's understood the first 14 schools were chosen on the basis that the road at the front of the buildings is being taken in charge by Galway City Council.
However a tender for school zone designs for all schools in the city is also being progressed, while engagement with each school community will form part of the tender process.
