Work begins on connecting Williamstown to Lough Mask Water Supply

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Irish Water has announced that it's to begin the process of connecting Williamstown to the Lough Mask Water supply in Mayo as part of a 10 million euro investment.

The town, along with Ballinlough in Co Roscommon will be connected to the major supply in a bid to improve the service for customers in the region.

Williamstown has previously been plagued with water related issues, including a Cryptosporidium outbreak which resulted in a boil notice which remained in place for almost two years.

The current supply there serves around 8500 homes and businesses.

Construction will get underway in the coming weeks on 22 kilometers of new water mains, which will connect the Lough Mask supply to the Williamstown and Ballinlough networks.

The existing Williamstown water treatment plant will be decommissioned as part of the project.

Works are expected to be completed early next year.
