Former heroin addict from Woodquay jailed for nearly causing motorway crash

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A former heroin addict from the city has been sentenced to 8 months in prison for a series of road traffic offences including almost causing a motorway crash.

At Ennis District Court this week, Judge Patrick Durcan handed down the sentence to 48 year old Keith Morkan of St. Brendan's Road, Woodquay.

The court heard that Keith Morkan drove on to the M18 motorway near Ennis, Co. Clare, veered across the road and clipped the wing mirror of a car being driven by a woman.

Gardaí who were on duty on the day in question witnessed Morkan's car being driven erractically with two smashed windows and a tyre missing on one wheel.

According to today's Irish Times, gardai pursued Morkan and when he pulled over he tested positive for opiates.

Morkan's defence solicitor told the court that his client's heroin addiction has done untold damage to his mond and body and that he is now drug free.

Judge Patrick Durcan said that a 'very horrific collision' was avoided by the female motorist on the motorway who had to take evasive action.

Morkan was sentenced to a total of 8 months in jail for offences including dangerous driving and driving under the influence.
