Wild brown trout facing extinction in Lough Corrib

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Stocks of wild brown trout in Lough Corrib are facing extinction due to increasing numbers of predator pike.

That's according to the Connacht Angling Council, which says the situation could have serious implications for local tourism.

It says Lough Corrib in Galway and Lough Mask in Mayo among other lakes are all in danger of having stocks wiped out.

The Council is calling on Inland Fisheries Ireland to introduce closed season for fishing and an immediate cull of predator pike.

It will launch a campaign ‘Pike are Predators – Save our Wild Brown Trout’ at the Boat Inn, Oughterard on Wednesday evening at 8.
